Earth is not nicknamed the "Blue Planet" for nothing - no other known planet is as watery. We divided this huge body of water into the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Artic and Southern Oceans but in reality they re all connected as one ocean.
The Five Ocean:
Pacific Ocean: 155.6 million sq km
Atlantic Ocean: 82.4 million sq km
India Ocean: 73.6 million sq km
Southern Ocean: 20.3 million sq km
Artic Ocean: 14.1 million sq km
Tell me more: Ocean Water
Salt: On average, each litre(2 pints) of water contains about 35g of salt, although shallow, warmer seas are usually saltier.
Light: Sunlight allows plants to grow underwater to a depth of about 200m. Below this, the water get darker the deeper you get and plants cannot grow.
Pressure: The deeper you go in the sea , the more squeezing force there is. The polystyrene cup on the right was same size as the one on the left until attached to the outside of a deep - sea submersible and crushed by pressure.
Temperature: The surface temperature of tropical seas is bout 25degree Celsius and in most other seas about 17 degree Celsius in summer and 10 degree Celsius in winter. The temperature at the bottom of the ocean is 2 degree Celsius.
Sound: Sound travels at the speed of 1531 m/s under water four times faster than it does in the air.
